Chapter 11

“Your boyfriend is insane,” Silva informed Ricardo. “You are aware of that, aren’t you?”

Ricardo nodded, gaze still fixed on August and Kevin, who were now having a quieter conversation on the other side of the boiler room. “No one is more aware of that than me.”

He could feel Silva watching him. The man probably had dozens of question marks floating above his head, but to his credit, he kept them to himself. Likely because he didn’t want to know the answers.

Or because he’s afraid that if August and I can make it work, there’s no reason for him not to go after Detective Chandler.

The thought made Ricardo chuckle. His headcanon about Chandler and Silva was ridiculous, but it was also endlessly entertaining because he knew it pissed off Silva. This wasn’t really the time or place for things like that, but amusing himself with an imaginary romcom starring Chandler and Silva helped keep him moderately sane while he was up to his ass in drug cartels and returning a favor to a made man. He’d take what he could get.

“What’s so funny?” Silva demanded, louder this time.

Kevin’s head snapped toward them. August turned around. All three men in the room eyed Ricardo.

Ricardo decided to lean into it. Still letting his amusement show, he spoke in Catalan to Silva: “I just said something funny to you. Look right at him and snicker.”

Silva didn’t move. In Italian, he growled, “What are you talking about?”

Ricardo turned to him, and he grinned. “Haven’t you ever interrogated someone before?” He gestured at Kevin and added with a laugh, “The more we fuck with his head, the more he’ll get scared and tell us what we need to know.”

At that, Silva laughed, and Ricardo didn’t think it was entirely fake. The clap on his shoulder was definitely just to sell the charade, though, and Silva shook his head as he turned to Kevin. “Correction,” he said in Italian. “You and your boyfriend are both insane.”

August chuckled too, rolling his eyes, and he said in French, “Your mom doesn’t think I’m insane.”

Silva’s humor vanished, his eyes narrowing as he fixed them on August.

“August,” Ricardo warned, gesturing at Kevin.

August gave Silva a bratty wink, then faced Kevin again.

Kevin, who had, during that multilingual interplay, turned white as an incandescent bulb, looked from one man to the next. “What the fuck are you guys saying? What’s going on?” He nodded toward Ricardo and Silva. “Are they going to kill me? Please don’t let them kill me.”

“They might,” August said brightly. Gesturing over his shoulder, he added, “Especially that one. He’s a fucking lunatic.”

“Does he mean you or me?” Silva asked under his breath.

Ricardo shrugged. “Either or.”

In French, August called out over his shoulder, “I mean the one who’s keeping a used car in my garage like a fucking philistine.”

Ricardo and Silva both laughed for real, which absolutely scared the ever-loving fuck out of Kevin.

That was, of course, the idea. The irreverent exchange should have been out of place in an interrogation like this, but it was exquisitely effective in making their captive nervous.
